Celebrity wedding at a fraction of the cost!

by emma 12. December 2013 10:38

There has been a real rush of celebrity engagements over the last few weeks with Leighton Meester and Adam Brody confirming their intended nuptials, Ashton Kutcher allegedly about to make it official with Mila Kunis and of course the elaborate proposal of Kanye West to Kim Kardashian!  Celebrities love to flash the bling and go over the top and I have no doubt that some of these A-list weddings will be nothing short of spectacular!  Kim’s second wedding to Kris Humphries cost $10 million and Justin Timberlake’s recent nuptials were around $6.5 million!!  Even the average UK wedding costs well over £20,000 these days!  However, it really IS possible to have a beautiful and romantic wedding without breaking the bank!

Here are my top ten ideas for a wedding on a budget:

Choose a less popular date – Fridays and Sundays are becoming increasingly common as venues are usually cheaper and you can save money by avoiding Spring and Summer with dates in January, February, October and November often costing less
Although it is good to provide sparkling wine for a toast and some wine on the table (remember to avoid corkage costs if possible), you do not have to have a free bar all day and night, just mention on the invite that it will be a pay bar in the evening so that guests can come prepared
Sit down meals can be expensive so go for a buffet or BBQ (with a good organiser to manage any queues).  I even went to a wedding where the cake was made of pork pie and wheels of cheese so this doubled as food for the evening.  Great money saving!
If you have handy friends, ask for their help in lieu of a wedding gift.  Cake makers, photographers, singers and hairdressers could all provide their expertise for free, or at least with a big discount!
For ‘the dress’ look at eBay and Preloved.  Most wedding dresses are only worn once so second hand gowns will probably be in excellent condition.  Also give Oxfam’s Bridal Collection a try as some designers donate ex-display dresses for just a couple of hundred pounds.
If you have been living together you probably don’t need traditional wedding gifts for your home, so ask for money to put towards your honeymoon or trips whilst you are there.  Sites like honeymiles and trailfinders are brilliant
Cut out expensive stationery by using a wedding website like gettingmarried.co.uk or weddingpath.co.uk where you can send out e-invites, receive RSVPs, update gift lists, give directions to the wedding and even share your photos
Don’t waste your money on hiring a classic car and go for something fun or quirky (like a friend’s vintage Beetle or even a tractor).  Being original or comical will still provide the wow factor and provide LOADS of great photo opportunities
Table centres can be made very cheaply. You could borrow jam jars and fill them with hand-picked flowers or use glass vases filled with floating candles or even oranges and lemons!  Lavender or rosemary from the garden would be gorgeous and make the room smell amazing as well!
Remember, being different (rather than ostentatious) is the way to make your wedding memorable.  Use sites like Pinterest to pick up some fabulous offbeat ideas that won’t cost a fortune.  Even something as simple as some twinkling fairy lights can turn a normal venue into something magical.

Iconic wedding dresses go on display at V and A Museum

by emma 10. December 2013 11:53

The history of the modern wedding dress is to be explored in a new exhibition of more than 80 nuptual gowns at the V and A museum - showing the rise of the classic white dress.Silk satin wedding dress designed by Charles James and worn by Baba (Barbara) Beaton in 1934 (V and A)

Featuring celebrity gowns worn by Gwen Stefani, Dita Von Teese and Mary Charteris, the collection follows the development of wedding dress designs from 1775 until present day.

The Dior outfits worn by Gwen Stefani and her husband Gavin Rossdale from their 2002 wedding will be on display, with the famous dip-dye pink trim to Gwen's extravegant white dress. And Dita Von Teese's deep purple ballgown designed by Vivienne Westwood stands out against the traditional white.

Sixty years of wedding bliss for Molly and Alan

by emma 5. December 2013 10:11

WHEN Molly Gough told her dad she was getting married, he told her it would not last six months.

Yet tomorrow, she and husband Alan will mark their diamond wedding after six decades of marriage – proving her dad was somewhat out with his prediction.

It was love at first sight when the pair, both 81, met in the park when they were 17, and after a very brief stint when Mr Gough went away with the Territorial Army, they have been inseparable ever since.

“We stuck, and now we’re all each other has, and we look after each other. It’s very easy to be happy because we love each other. It may sound silly, but we do,” Mr Gough told the Mail ahead of the big day.

“It’s give and take,” his wife added.

And romance is still a big part of live for the duo, who live in Rest Haven, Swadlincote. Mr Gough heads out to buy his wife the magazines she enjoys every single week, and buys her perfume on a regular basis. He said he thought it was ‘most important’ to treat her. They were planning to spend their anniversary at home with a bottle of champagne and a box of chocolates.

They were 21 when they walked down the aisle at the Wesleyan Chapel in Swadlincote. They moved into his mother’s house in Coppice Side, before moving to their own home when they were expecting their second child. They had three children, and now have nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Both agreed they had enjoyed a ‘good married life’, and suggested it may have something to do with the fact they like arguing.

Mr Gough, a former pit worker, said: “I can’t understand these people who are married and say they never have arguments.”

But they always make up quickly, and get back to martial bliss.

“We would be lost to death without one another. We miss each other when we don’t see each other,” Mrs Gough said.

Christian Slater Marries Brittany Lopez

by emma 4. December 2013 10:24

The 44-year-old Nymphomaniac star and his girlfriend of a few years Brittany Lopez tied the knot in Coral Gables, Fla. yesterday, E! News confirms. According to the couple's marriage license, they wed in front of a judge at a local Miami area courthouse.

This is the second marriage for Slater, who has two kids with ex-wife Ryan Haddon, a son, Jaden Christopher, and a daughter, Eliana. Slater and Haddon married in 2000 and separated in 2005
later officially announced his engagement back in February 2013 during an appearance on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon.

"Congratulations, you're engaged!" Jimmy Fallon said to Slater, who replied, "Yeah, that's true," before giving the audience the thumbs-up.

Slater said that he met Lopez when he was staying on Florida's Little Palm Island a couple years ago. "This girl came walking along with another lady, a slightly older lady, and I was sitting in my usual spot eating my oatmeal that morning," he explained to Fallon. "So I'm a filthy old man eating my oatmeal and she comes walking along. This spot, I guess, was famous for people proposing to each other, actually. It was very, very nice. So she's there with this old lady and, next thing I know, she gets down on one knee and proposes to this older lady...I'd seen a lot of crazy stuff down in the Florida Keys! I of course was very intrigued and I went over and sat down in my other usual spot."

"I thought I'd just witnessed a nice lesbian engagement so I was coming over to say congratulations," Slater continued. "But it turns out it was her aunt and she was just trying to help her aunt capture the beauty and the romance of the park...The next thing I knew we were hanging out in the Everglades."

Gallery: the best coloured wedding dresses from the catwalk

by emma 3. December 2013 11:02

02 DECEMBER 2013 White has always been the most popular choice of colour for brides when it comes to choosing their wedding gown, but some celebrities have ditched the traditional look and donned colourful dresses instead.
While Gwen Stefani and Anne Hathaway opted for two-toned pink and white numbers, Avril Lavigne and Sarah Jessica Parker went completely opposite and wore jet black on their big day.

Looking back at the catwalks of this year's bridal fashion shows, it seems these fashion-forward celebrities had all the reason not to wear white.
